Record Store Day Invitation

Duration: Three Weeks

Problem:

With technology and social media replacing traditional forms of communication, physical invitations have become increasingly rare. This shift has distanced people from the personal, handcrafted qualities that tangible design offers. This project aims to revive the charm of paper invitations while highlighting how thoughtful, locally made designs can support small businesses and foster community connection.

Background:

Vertigo Music is a local record store in downtown Grand Rapids known for its wide vinyl selection, laid-back atmosphere, and dedication to music culture. As one of West Michigan’s leading independent record stores, Vertigo has built its reputation on carrying new and used albums, with a focus on independent and hard-to-find artists. Each year, the shop participates in Record Store Day, an event that celebrates independent record stores through limited-edition releases and community gatherings, bringing music lovers together while supporting small, local businesses.

Solution:

To promote Record Store Day at Vertigo Music, I designed a physical invitation that captures the energy and nostalgia of vinyl culture. The piece combines bold typography and layered textures to evoke the tactile experience of browsing records. Designed to function as both a handout and a poster, the invitation invites music lovers to celebrate the art of collecting, listening, and supporting local record stores.
