Class Project

Herb Lubalin Stamps

Duration: Three Weeks

Problem:

This project asked how the legacy of a graphic designer could be distilled into the small format of a postage stamp. The challenge was to capture their style and influence at a miniature scale while maintaining clarity, symbolism, and impact.

Lead Designer

Background:

Herb Lubalin is best known for designing the typeface Avant Garde, but his influence stretched far beyond it. As the visionary behind provocative magazines like Avant GardeEros, and Fact, Lubalin consistently pushed boundaries both visually and socially. He co-founded the International Typeface Corporation (ITC) and led Herb Lubalin, Inc., leaving an unmistakable mark on typography and graphic design throughout the 1960s and 70s.

Solution:

To honor Herb Lubalin’s legacy, I reimagined his iconic Avant Garde typeface by reconstructing his own name with it. This approach highlights the lasting impact of his work while showcasing how his bold, experimental style can continue to inspire new interpretations.
